SQL Database Administrator

Novipro is currently looking for a SQL Database Administrator for one of its clients for a permanent position in Montreal.

Our client is looking for an MS-SQL database administrator in an evolving database environment that includes MS SQL, Oracle and DB2; most of our databases are part of a virtual machine environment. The successful candidate will work with the database administrator support team to design, implement and maintain various MS-SQL databases and will also participate in various initiatives such as the implementation of new applications or the upgrading of outdated infrastructures within the company. The person will also be required to assist application programmers. The successful candidate will be proficient in the monitoring techniques required for the ongoing operation of MS-SQL databases and be able to produce reports to identify problems and corrective actions as required.

In your job with us, you will be asked to work on the following:

  • Provide level 3 support for MS-SQL databases;
  • Identify any problems with the central processing unit, memory, I/O, SQL server disk space and other resource;
  • usage conflicts and provide troubleshooting services accordingly;
  • Manage backups, restores, recovery models, database compression activities, DBCC commands, database mirroring and replication;
  • Effectively perform index creation, data integrity checks, configuration and program correction;


  • Efficiently use SQL Server server management tools (Profiler, DTA, SSMS, SSRS, SSRS, SSIS, SSCM, PerfMon, DMVs);
  • Create, maintain and update instances or databases for use in development and production environments;
  • Liaise with application programmers to help solve problems;
  • Comply with standards, and write, update and document the monitoring scripts necessary to support databases;
  • Communicate and cooperate effectively with staff members with various technical expertise;
  • Work on call.

What we are looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science and three years of relevant experience or a combination of a college diploma and solid experience;
  • At least three years of experience with MS-SQL servers (2005 and newer) as a database administrator;
  • At least three years of experience with Windows servers in virtual machine environments;
  • Strong experience in troubleshooting and solving problems related to database integrity, performance, blocking and interlocking, replication and connectivity;
  • Experience in optimizing performance and queries using performance monitoring tools, SQL Profiler and other related monitoring and troubleshooting tools;
  • Experience in supporting environments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week;
  • On-call support outside working hours for critical database issues;
  • Good communication skills (oral and written) in both official languages;
  • Strong initiative, autonomy and thoroughness;
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Good sense of priorities and ability to operate in an environment of high pressure.

Asset :

  • Experience with Oracle and DB2 databases;
  • Knowledge of third-party database management tools and applications (e.g., Redgate, Idera, SCOM);
  • Knowledge of a scripting language, such as Powershell;
  • Experience or knowledge of the AIX operating system.
